Chesapeake is a growing city within Virginia, with a population of over 230,000 as of 2013. The community has established itself as an integral component of the greater Hampton Roads area. This is owing to its proximity to many waterfront areas, including the Great Dismal Swamp. The city actually has miles of waterfront property, helping to cultivate a growing industrial base over the years as well. The city itself was actually created in 1963, forming its independence from the nearby community of South Norfolk. Over the decades, it has grown in importance as a bedroom community for some of the surrounding areas.
The economy of Chesapeake has diversified to a significant degree over the past few years as well. This is owing to the fact that there are several military bases in the area, which provide a substantial amount of support. The Chesapeake Regional Medical Center has also helped to establish a presence within the community as well. Companies such as QVC and Hewlett Packard have moved in to the area, providing employment opportunities for many residents. This has also allowed a commercial presence to become established within Chesapeake. Currently, Chesapeake City Public Schools is the top employer located in the area. This organization employs over 5000 local residents.
