As the second largest and oldest city in South Carolina, Charleston is the principal city in the Charleston Summerville Charleston North Metropolitan Area. The city is located south of the geo midpoint of South Carolina coastline. It was founded in honor of King Charles II as Charles Towne in 1670, and finally adopted its current name in 1783. In 1680, it moved to the present location. Charleston has a total population of around 713,000 and is considered the 75th largest metropolitan area in the U.S. and third largest city in the state. The city is made up of six distinctive areas: Cainhoy Peninsula, Daniel Island, James Island, Johns Island, West Ashley and the Peninsula or Downtown. Charleston covers a total area of about 127.5 square miles. The racial makeup of the city is 4.4% Latinos and Hispanic, 1.6% Asian, 41.1% African American and 52.2% White.
The main economic activity in Charleston is tourism boasting of many bed and breakfasts, inns, hotel chains and luxury hotels. The other major activity is shipping as two large shipping terminals serve the city. Charleston is also the hub for information technology corporations and jobs with exponential growth experienced between 2011 through 2012.
