The Clarksville area has gradually grown in to a substantial metropolitan area in its own right. The population in 2010 was actually over 130,000, owing to some rapid development over the past few years. But the city has a lot of history in its own right, which has helped it to develop its own character. It grew considerably during the course of the 19th century, and made the transition from an agrarian to an industrial economy. The city was heavily involved during the U.S. Civil War, being captured during the course of 1862 by Union gunboat forces. At the end of the war, the city began to transition in to the modern Clarksville that people see today.
Today, the city is well known for supporting the arts and the local economy. There are extensive murals painted on the buildings in Clarksville, which depict the diverse history of the city. Austin Peay State University and Nashville State Community College both play significant roles in the local economy. Other major corporations include Agero, Inc. and the Vulcan Corporation. Fort Campbell has become the largest employer in the area, which has become a driving force within the city itself. The city is also served by the Nashville International Airport, which has influenced the economy of the city in many ways.
