Known as the Princess City, Mishawaka is found next to South Bend nestled next to the St. Joseph River. Early settlers who arrived there to mine deposits at the beginning of the 1830s created Mishawaka. In a couple of years, the total population had grown to 200 residents with several businesses springing up. 1872 saw the destruction of about three quarters of the business district but the residents managed to rebuild it and attract new investments. New manufacturing companies set base in the town and helped it flourish again. Mishawaka now has a population of about 48,252. It is the principal city of South Bend – Mishawaka, IN.
In agricultural circles, Mishawaka is known as the peppermint capital of the world due to the regions black loam soils that facilitated the production of huge quantities of mint. Mishawaka has grown both in terms of agriculture and industry and by 1915 it was home of American Simplex luxurious cars. Apart from agriculture and industrial expansion, Mishawaka is home to great shopping complexes such as City Plaza on University DR and FIR Road, Heritage Square on Cleveland Rd and Indian Ridge Shopping Center on Grape Road. Other malls include Value City Shopping Center, Wilshire Plaza and University Park Mall all on Grape Road.
