The chain specializes in mouthwatering chicken dishes as well as a whole range of other options, and the restaurant is set to open in front of the old Food World grocery store just off Highway 231.
The first Popeyes was opened in New Orleans, Lousiana in the 1970's as 'Chicken on the Run,' and has had a whole host of names since then including 'Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits' as well as' Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken & Biscuits,' before settling on the current name of 'Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen' which takes the company back to it's southern roots. The original intention was to compete with Kentucky Fried Chicken, but the initial company failed after only a few months and was re-established at a slightly later date as Popeyes and with a more upbeat, spicy chicken dish on the menu than previously.
The chain now operates as a subsidiary company of a Toronto conglomerate, and Popeyes is reputed to be the 2nd biggest quick service chicken restaurant in America. There are now over 2,600 branches in over 40 states, and the expansion does not stop there as the chain also operates in 30 countries internationally and it seems that the demand for quick service chicken dishes knows no limits!
The company was on the verge of disappearing forever in the 90's when it ran into financial problems and filed for bankruptcy, but luckily a plan was hatched by a group of creditors to create a new parent company for Popeyes and another similar company specializing in chicken dishes. Since then the chain has gone from strength to strength with not only multiple branches but a range of franchise operations too.
The restaurant in Wetumpka, Alabama will no doubt attract as much attention as it's many predecessors with the tried and tested range of chicken dishes and a tasty menu that has been found to tempt customers far and wide. However, Popeyes also has a another claim to fame, namely it's biscuits, which have become famous for their tasty, but very dry texture leading to them becoming famous as an internet phenomenon!
