The retailer’s market share is increasing at a fast pace not only in these states, but also nationally. Once the expansion plan is complete, Aldi is set to rank third in the list of largest US supermarkets by supermarket count, only behind Walmart and Kroger.
2019 has been the year of expansion for this German grocer. By the end of the year, Aldi will have 27 remodelled stores across the North Star state. Also by the end of the year, the total number of Minnesota stores is expected to reach 70, coming close to market leader Cub. New supermarkets will open in Richfield and Minneapolis, expected to be ready on August 15 and 22 respectively. Later in the year, Aldi has plans to open new stores in Chanhassen, St Louis Park, Blaine, Phalen Village, St Paul, and Roseville.
The German grocer will soon be entering the Alabama market with a new supermarket in Montgomery. The new location has its grand opening scheduled for August 1, and the event will include a gift card giveaway to the first 100 customers of the day. Shoppers will also get a chance to win a year’s worth of produce.
The grocery chain will be opening two new supermarkets in October: one in Cary, and another one in Capital Boulevard, Raleigh. In 2020, a second store is planned to open in Raleigh, as well as one in Holly Springs. With these new openings, Aldi expects to gradually increase its market share in the Triangle, which as of July 2019 is set at 0.4 percent.
